Here’s one of my favorite quotes:

“When people say to me ‘How do you do so many things?,’ I often answer them, without meaning to be cruel, ‘How do you do so little?’ It seems to me that people have vast potential. Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks. Yet most people don’t. They treat life as if it goes on forever.” — Philip Adams.

Mr. Adams is really on to something with his keen observation. Far too many people, artists especially, seem to wait around for something to happen instead of making it happen themselves (whatever that ‘it’ means to you).

Now there is a difference between being busy and busy-ness. I take on a lot of artistic pursuits, but I pick and choose wisely. Some gigs I do for fun; others I do for money. I turn down a lot of possibilities, too. Sometimes saying ‘no’ hurts, but I try to be practical. You can’t do everything. But you must pursue all those need-tos you choose to bring into your life with vigor and passion.

Peter Drucker sums this up best for me:

“People who don’t take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year. People who do take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year.”

What do you think?
