102609 Tip of Week

Posted on Oct 26 2009

Sorry folks, I missed a couple of weeks due to illness (not h1n1) and some tough deadlines for projects including a film. However, this past weekend I had the good fortune to attend (and speak at) the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) Annual Conference. CEO brings college students together to learn and share new ideas that foster entrepreneurialism. It was quite inspiring and refreshing to mingle with so many bright, enthusiastic young people who are trying to make their mark with their own business.

I was part of an Arts Entrepreneurship seminar track, a similar approach to the Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) conferences that I am involved with and that are near and dear to my heart. You should check out both of these important organizations.

What was particularly interesting is how many of these students not only worked with their college campus entrepreneurial programs and clubs, but also how many already ran their own little business. For example, I met the delightful Sara Z. who teaches piano lessons via Skype. She told me her story with the raw, unabashed eagerness of a budding entrepreneur. She’s going places, and that came through in our conversation. When I told her I was going to mention her in this week’s newsletter she reminded me that I should include her Website (I love ruthless self-promoters!). So how could I not help her promote her fledgling business? You go, Sara!

My session was called: “Building a Slash Career/Life That Satisfies Your Creative Side and Restless Artistic Nature.” I had a blast and really enjoyed talking with the students after my sessions. As a long-time (lifetime?) entrepreneur, getting another opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences with others and hopefully inspire some to pursue their passions is what it is all about.
