Gear and how to pay for it
I despise unexpected expenses. I lost a computer a few weeks ago and then another had a memory problem (which I kinda fixed) only to have it start running like a three-legged dog. So I bought a new i7 and it came with Windows 7 64-bit and I’m loving it. My native 64-bit apps run fantastically. Audio and video render times are down and my ability to multitask more is great. The new box has a big mirrored Raid 1, loads of RAM, and lotsa other goodies.
Usually I’m slow to go to new stuff, but I was starting two big projects and I couldn’t really take the chance on the old machine. Of course, I always say never start a new project with a new computer and new software, but I did it anyway (and have had some issues … duh!). In future, I should probably follow my own advice, eh?
As a side-note, I purchased the new computer using a no-interest for 12 months deal. It’ll cost a few bucks a month and that makes sure it’s paid off before incurring any finance charges. That has two advantages: One, paying in installments doesn’t impact the cash flow as hard and second, free financing is always a prudent business decision, IMHO.
