Isn’t education the most important thing?

Posted on May 06 2010

It’s amazing that we can spend huge sums of money on a so-called war, but then lay off teachers. It’s frustrating that we can find money to bail out Wall Street, but can’t pay for physical education classes, art classes, and fund after school activities.

It’s messed  up. Very.

Did you know that 25 hedge fund managers made a billion dollars each. A billion. That’s absurd. And it’s even more nefarious when you take into account that they profited by the economy going into the tank. They didn’t make money on growth or new ideas or helping others. They earned their blood money betting on failure. Absurd.

Meanwhile we can pay $30,000-45,000 a year to keep a criminal locked up, but can’t seem to find around $10,000 to educate a child. Stupid.

Now I know we have a lot of short-term fires to piss on, but we need to keep an eye on the future, too. And education more than anything will bring long-term benefits. The more you know, the more you can do. And education will bring jobs … not necessarily for the guy who just got laid off, but ultimately it will pay off for that guy, his children and the future world.

Education is for NOW and Tomorrow. (Read this blog post from Robert Reich, too and watch the video).

Don’t you agree?
