Why the number 4 is my favorite number
My son asked me what my favorite number is and I told him 4. He asked me why and, frankly, I had to really think about it. I couldn’t remember the actual reason why because for as long as I can remember, #4 was it.
Then I saw something that lead me toward a possible answer. The Thunderbirds. No not the Navy ones, the goofy marionette ones from 60′s TV. They had several machines to which Thunderbird 4, a small utility submersible for underwater rescue was my favorite.
As a kid I used to rush home from school for lunch (yes we did that sort of thing in my day!), gobble up my meal and catch a bit of the show. That submarine made quite an impact on me and to this day its number – 4 – is my favorite.
Here’s the famous countdown that opened the show:

Wow, there was actually someone else who watched (or even wanted to watch) the Thunderbirds like I did? Thunderbird 2 was my favorite (http://www.thunderbirds.com/machines.htm). I had that and Thunderbird 3 toys. My favorite number is 7 so the Thunderbirds didn’t influence me in this area. I’m not sure why 7 is my favorite. It could have been that I needed to enter some number on one of those Jr. High quizzes that used to get passed around and I had to pick some number and ended up sticking with it since then.
Thunderbirds: my son bought the DVD boxed set for XMas two years ago. These are still way better than ‘Team America’, except for the puppet sex.
Oh wait, the number thing. My favorite number is 7. I could never remember it when I was learning to count; I think it was 4 (your favorite number…hmmmm). But I liked 7-Up. And eventually 007. But not ’7 Brides for 7 Brothers’. 7 of 9 was pretty hot though.
Yep, I do like 7….

Jeffrey,
Favorite number is 13. So many people have been afraid of it…that I am attracted to it. I have won tournaments by being in the 13th position, or by starting in lucky number 13 on my jersey… ah well 13 is a great number… on another note, and I am sure you did not know, but the thunderbirds are Air Force and the Blue Angels are Navy. Go Navy Blue and Gold. Great Blog and I look forward to your next book due out now…
Thanks Skip for adding your insight to the conversation. Obviously triskaidekaphobia is something you don’t have (but a lot of architects must with so few 13th floors in buildings). And Soundtrack Success delayed by the printer, but should be along around August 1, 2011.
