Ignorance is NOT bliss

Posted on Sep 07 2010

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.” — Albert Einstein.

Or to put it more simply in the irreverent  words of comedian Ron White: “You can’t fix stupid!”

Ignorance is a completely other matter, though. It is acceptable not to know something as long as you are willing to explore further and discover the answer. There is no shame in “I don’t know.” And there is great respect for “But I’ll find out!”

(If you are not willing to find and know the truth, you are neither stupid nor ignorant — you are just a fool.)

Seek the truth always. Listen to BOTH sides of an issue and then make your own decision. Don’t be ignorant, xenophobic, complacent, or biased. Instead strive to be an informed citizen. Always.

I like what James Dale had to say in his book, The Obvious: “Ignorance is temporary. Stupidity, on the other hand, is forever.”

Don’t you agree?

  1. Jon Coble says:

I think ‘idiot’ falls under stupidity, being that it’s defined as “an utterly foolish or senseless person.”
With that said, I like the saying, “Even if you make it idiot proof, someone will always build a better idiot”
As my teachers have always said, “the only stupid question is the one not asked” (which isn’t 100% true, but very close).
