Film Music Contest

Posted on Sep 17 2011

To support the release of my latest book Soundtrack Success – A Digital Storyteller’s Guide to Audio Post-Production, I thought it’d be fun to have a contest. The winner (chosen at random) gets a FREE, autographed copy of the book.

What’s the catch?

Think of your favorite movie, TV show, documentary, or commercial where the use of MUSIC was exceptional. Post your favorite movie music sequence and why you selected it using the Comments to this article below.

The contest is open from now through September 30, 2011 – so hurry. The contest is closed.

For example: Amadeus (Mozart / Sir Neville Marriner) uses Mozart’s music both as source music and as dramatic underscore. While the entire movie moves back and forth with this technique, the sequence near the movie’s end is especially effective. As Mozart dictates his “Requiem” to Salieri, we hear the music in his head (diegetic) as if the orchestra were there in his bedroom. When Mozart reviews Salieri’ work, the scene cuts away to Mozart’s wife desperately trying to get back to her husband by carriage. The exact same music as heard before now transforms to dramatic underscore (non-diegetic) to the scene.

Another favorite music sequence is from Pixar’s UP — the amazing Married Life by Michael Giacchino. You can listen to that clip here.

Now it’s your turn.

How to enter:

  • Start a new comment.
  • Enter in your contact information
  • Write up the sequence you selected and why you think its music is so good. Don’t pick a whole movie, just a particular musical sequence.
  • If there’s a YouTube clip of the sequence available, post a link to it, too.
  • Winner will be chosen at random from the comments received.

Post your favorite film music moment using the Comments below. You could win a free autographed copy of Soundtrack Success (more on the book here).

One of the most iconic moments that really got me to love movies is the “Welcome to Jurassic Park” scene of Jurassic Park. This is where the characters (and audience) first get an up and close look at the dinosaurs.

John Williams does a great job as always in using the music in one of the most memorable songs of the movie to bring a ‘larger than life, nothing is impossible’ feel to the moment.

I tried my best but couldn’t find a better clip on YouTube than this one of someone taking a video of their tv screen, but it still gets the job done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4Oi5Mm3SRk&feature=related

The contest is now closed and the winner, the only entry, was David. He won a free copy of Soundtrack Success. Congrats!
